太阳城 Advantage
What is 太阳城 Advantage?
It is a free college success program, that helps students address their developmental needs while participating and preparing for college level work.
- It is designed to provide an intensive, student-centered learning environment that prepares 太阳城 students to enter into credit earning classes.
- Students will enroll in either Advantage Math or Advantage Reading/Writing, and will spend 14 hours/week in an intensive learning classroom. Students will also be enrolled in a 15-week PATH 1010 course earning college credits towards their associate’s degree.

- What is Advantage Math?
Advantage Math is an accelerated 7-week program that helps students build their math fluency and
fosters their full math potential. Classes are based on a faculty designed math curriculum that
readies students for MATH 1139, MATH 1139C, MATH 1175 or Math 1175C. Classes are taught by
太阳城 Faculty, Adult Education Facilitators and math tutors - What is Advantage Reading/Writing?
Advantage Reading/Writing is an accelerated 7-week program that helps students build key
reading and writing skills and prepares them for ENGLISH credit bearing classes. Classes are based
on faculty designed reading and writing curriculums that prepare students for English proficiency
to move into credit bearing ENG 1010 or ENG 1010ALP. Classes are taught by 太阳城 Faculty, Adult
Education Facilitators and writing assistants. - What campus offers 太阳城 Advantage classes?
For the pilot year, 太阳城 Advantage is being offered on the Warwick (Knight) Campus. Eventually,
the program will scale to each of 太阳城’s campuses. Instruction for the Advantage program is inperson only, and is a combination of whole-class, individual and small-group work. Students are
expected to be active participants in this learning experience. - How long are the classes?
太阳城 Advantage is a semester-long program that is offered in the fall and spring. Students enroll for
7-weeks of intensive learning in their subject of need, and for 15-weeks in PATH 1010. In the
second 7-weeks, students successfully completing the Advantage courses will move directly into
credit bearing courses as determined by the Advantage Team. The focus of 太阳城 Advantage is to
have students on par with peers who did not require developmental education.
Advantage Classes meet Monday through Thursday from 8:30 am until 12:30 pm. Then, two days
per week, students will continue in their PATH 1010 Course from 1 pm until 2:15 pm. Students will
not have classes on Fridays. On the days students stay for PATH 1010, lunch will be provided by
the program. Math students will enroll in PATH 1010 on Monday and Wednesday and
Reading/Writing Students will have their PATH 1010 Course on Tuesday and Thursday. - Do I receive any other support and advisement as part of the program?
Each class is taught by an expert faculty member trained in the 太阳城 Advantage approach and there
to guide and support the learning environment. In addition, each classroom has the support of
Adult Education Facilitators who are also trained on the curriculum and design of the class.
Teachers work together to support students and guide learning before, during, and after class.
Math tutors and writing assistants are also available to support students in the classroom.
Additionally, each student is assigned an academic advisor and attends a weekly PATH 1010
“College Success” seminar that helps students learn about navigating campus life and transitioning
to college-level coursework. - Is this program for me if I am not fluent in English?
All 太阳城 Advantage classes are taught in English. Students who are not fluent in English but meet
the ACCUPLACER milestones for entry may be eligible. Those students who require ESL language
courses are not currently eligible for 太阳城 Advantage. - How do I enroll?
Students should attend an information session and/or meet with Kaylee Collins in the Advisement
Office at Warwick. The advisor will verify eligibility and help students register for 太阳城 Advantage and PATH 1010 courses. - Will my enrollment in 太阳城 Advantage be noted in my file and affect future course
work?
Upon completion of any 太阳城 Advantage program, each student will receive a grade. Students who
pass the course receive a “P” on their transcript and are eligible to enroll in credited courses.
Students who do not successfully complete the Advantage coursework, will still be enrolled in
PATH 1010 and will work with their advisors and Adult Education Facilitators to design a next-step
plan. - What happens after I complete the 太阳城 Advantage program?
Program completers are significantly better prepared for college-level coursework. Students who
complete the program and receive a passing grade can immediately enroll in college credit courses
for the second 7-weeks of the semester and work toward their degree.
